Sonia Bompastor A Really Special Moment

Sonia Bompastor: ‘A really special moment’

Lyon end their 14-year wait for a Coupe de France triumph, but the coach stays grounded

After leading Lyon to the Coupe de France triumph on Saturday, coach Sonia Bompastor praised her team's resilience and determination.

Lyon won their first Coupe de France title in 14 years after beating the holders Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the final at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble.

It was a special moment for the club and for Bompastor, who took charge in 2019. It was also a sweet victory for Lyon, who had lost to PSG in the final in 2018.

Speaking after the match, Bompastor said: "It's a really special moment for us. We've been working hard for this all season and it's finally paid off. We played a great game and we deserved to win."

Lyon opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Amandine Henry, but PSG leveled in the 30th minute when Ramona Bachmann converted a penalty.

The winner came in the 75th minute when Delphine Cascarino scored a stunning goal from outside the area. It was a goal that was worthy of winning any final.

Bompastor added: "We showed great character today. We went behind but we didn't give up. We kept fighting and we got our reward in the end."

The victory was Lyon's 11th Coupe de France title, moving them one clear of PSG in the all-time standings.

It was also a record-breaking night for Henry, who became the first player to score in four different Coupe de France finals.

Bompastor will now turn her attention to the Champions League, where Lyon will face Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

Lyon are aiming to win the treble this season and Bompastor knows that they will need to produce another special performance to achieve their goal.

She said: "We're going to enjoy this victory but we know that the Champions League is our main objective. We're going to prepare well and we're going to do everything we can to win it."
